Chapter Fifteen
The walls crowded in on Charlotte, pressing her down into the cold, damp stone below her. Creatures rustled somewhere above her head. Any minute something might drop on her, use her as just another outcropping of rock. Not knowing what was going on around her was the worst part. After all, this wasn’t her first time in this cave. She was in no danger of getting lost, there was only one passable way to the surface. Even as a child she’d been too big to fit through any of the tiny side passages.
She cursed and screamed until her throat was raw from the strain. Her cries were of no use. Even if someone heard her, she was unlikely to elicit help. She’d screamed bloody murder when they’d stopped at Lord Stone’s estate so Cantor could continue on to London and inform his boss of her capture. She ended up locked in a room while Timmons “got a bit o’ shut eye.” The servants were all too afraid of Lord Stone to come to her aid.
The brief hope that Miss Crawford would come to her senses and somehow help her get away had been dashed almost immediately. The clueless woman had smirked at her throughout the carriage ride. She hadn’t even blinked when Timmons dragged Charlotte out of the carriage. It wasn’t until they arrived at Stone’s estate that her demeanor changed. Cantor had slammed the door in her face and driven off with her screaming at him to take her home.
Tears leaked down Charlotte’s cheeks, but with her arms tethered to her side, she couldn’t manage to wipe them away. She couldn’t stand Miss Crawford, but the poor woman didn’t deserve whatever Cantor had in mind for her. Remembering the article Sawyer had mentioned months ago twisted her stomach in knots. Maybe neither she nor Alex had been the victim after all.
She twisted her knees up and to the side, just barely managing to reach the rope that bound her ankles. By the time she finished working the knot loose, the tips of her fingers were scraped and aching. The one benefit? The minor pain distracted her, at least a little, from the vast darkness of the cave that imprisoned her.
She stretched her legs out in front of her. A dozen pebbles lodged under her bum. Shifting was useless. All she managed was to move the tiny rocks so their sharp edges pricked relentlessly into her.
What was she going to do? She had to escape. She refused to die down here in the dark. Alone. Not when she had a chance for true love. If only James was willing to forgive her for being a blind fool.
And an idiot. Any sane woman would have jumped at the chance to marry a rich, titled man like James. What had she done? Said no. And why? Because she couldn’t give up on the idea that she might someday return to her life in the twenty-first century—the appeal of which faded every day she spent with James and Prue.
